Embark on Your Journey to Valles Caldera National Preserve

Route from Jemez Springs, NM

Starting your journey from Jemez Springs, chart your course northward on NM-4. The Preserve's splendor awaits you approximately 22 miles ahead. Keep your eyes peeled for the Main Gate and signs at Mile Marker 39.2, which herald your arrival at the Valles Caldera National Preserve.

Route from Los Alamos, NM

If you're beginning your adventure from Los Alamos, initiate your journey on Trinity Drive to Diamond. Make a left turn onto Diamond, followed by a right onto West Jemez Road until you hit the intersection with NM-4. Veer right, towards the magnificent Jemez Mountains and away from Bandelier National Monument. Continue your journey on the highway, and after approximately 18 miles, you'll find yourself at the Preserve’s doorstep. Again, look out for the Main Gate and signs at Mile Marker 39.2, the gateways to your adventure.

Weather Information

Each season offers a different experience: lush springs, moderate summers, golden falls, and snowy winters. Average temperatures are 22°F (-6 C) in January and 60°F (16 C) in July. Temperature extremes range from a high of 84°F (29 C) in summer to -30°F (-34C) in winter. Precipitation is heavier during summer monsoon rains (thunderstorms) in July and August and winter snowstorms in December through March. Higher elevation lends to much cooler temperatures than nearby Albuquerque.
