As you journey west on I-40, anticipate Exit 311 as your gateway to this ancient marvel. From here, a scenic 28-mile drive through the heart of the Petrified Forest National Park will guide you to Hwy 180 at the south end. After immersing in the park's wonders, a 19-mile return journey via Holbrook will lead you back to I-40.

For the Eastbound I-40 Explorer

If you're heading east on I-40, make your way to Exit 285 into Holbrook. From here, a 19-mile drive on Hwy 180 will take you to the park's south entrance. As you venture 28 miles north through the park, allow the stunning sights to captivate your senses before returning to I-40.

Petrified Forest National Park is a semi-arid grassland. Temperatures range from above 100° F (38° C) to well below freezing. About 10 inches (25.4 cm) of moisture comes during infrequent snow in the winter and often dramatic summer thunder-storms. Animals and plants are adapted to extremes in temperature and moisture.
