Pre-Journey Preparations

Before setting off on your adventure to the Mojave National Preserve, remember that the preserve does not have any gas stations. It's imperative to fuel up your vehicle prior to entering the vast, captivating desert landscape.

Commencing Your Journey

Begin your journey from the city of Barstow, California, situated 60 miles from the Preserve. Here, you can stop by the park headquarters to collect maps and other useful information that will enhance your visit. Please take note, however, that the park headquarters is not located within the Preserve itself.

Finding the Kelso Depot

Delve deeper into the Preserve to discover the Kelso Depot, the main visitor center. This historic desert oasis is nestled 95 miles east of Barstow and an equal distance west from the vibrant city of Las Vegas. It can be found at the crossroads of Kelso-Cima and Kelbaker Roads. However, please be aware that the Kelso Depot is presently closed for renovations. Seek adventure at the heart of the desert and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the natural world at the Mojave National Preserve.

Weather Information

Mojave Desert experiences change with the seasons. In winter, freezing temperatures and strong winds can be expected, with rain and snow in the mountains. With enough moisture, spring wildflowers may carpet the desert floor with vivid colors. Summers are hot, and temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit are typical. In summer, adventurers head for the higher elevations such as Mid-Hills and the New York Mountains. The cooler temperatures of fall mark hunting season.
